Life at COMPASS; As Told by Our Team23 August 2016

COMPASS Culture

Last month, COMPASS was recognized by the Baltimore Business Journal as one of the best places to work in Baltimore. After a morning team celebration, everyone began to discuss why they loved working here. With each response, we grew prouder to be a part of the COMPASS family. In the following, we’d like to share some of these thoughts with you.

Matt Flora
Senior Account Executive

Not a day goes by at COMPASS that I don’t laugh. Not many people can say this about their jobs. The COMPASS team has fostered a “work hard, play hard” culture like no other. Each day, we work diligently to satisfy the needs of our clients and truly make an impact in their security infrastructure. At the same time, I don’t think a day has passed where we haven’t laughed, celebrated (whether the accomplishment be large or small), and encouraged one another to improve our internal skillsets. We’re all very different, with backgrounds in IT, finance, sales, etc., but our passion to work hard, laugh often, and help each other grow brings us together as a team. I can’t imagine working anywhere else and am excited to watch the team thrive in the years to come.

Matt Voss
Senior Information Security Engineer

What I like about working at COMPASS is that everyone in the company shares the same vision. Our ethics and perspectives on our work are very similar, and it’s a great feeling to work with like-minded people. I also like that COMPASS feels like a family or friends’ get-together every day. Getting up in the morning and coming into work doesn’t feel like is an obligation, one where I’m trading my time for the company’s money; I feel like I’m lucky to come into the office every day, and I look forward to the day with my COMPASS family. Whether that’s a walk around the inner harbor with some folks at lunchtime or just discussing the latest trends in cyber or technology.

We’re the best place to work because of who we are — the people that work at COMPASS, that make COMPASS a company — that’s the reason it’s the best place to work in Baltimore.

Rich Davis
Information Technology Manager

I feel, by the way that I am treated, that I am a key player in the organization’s success. Bob is always keeping everyone abreast of the company’s new contracts, providing updates on current clients, and he’s always telling us thank you for the hard work and that we are the reason for such great success.

Bob always states that he is proud to have a staff like us and is honored to work with us.

Expectations are clearly defined. COMPASS values are identical to mine; we are a perfect match! We have a beautiful office location with awesome views. We all eat lunch together on a daily basis. We are a team! Several members of COMPASS came to my house to help hang cabinets. I didn’t have to ask anyone for help, they all offered.

We are afforded time to study for certification. Currently, several of us meet at 2:30 p.m. every day (one hour before quitting time) to teach each other and learn about new technology. We are like family.

I used to see COMPASS employees at my church. Little did I know then that I would one day work with these people. I am excited to go to work every day!

Julie O’Toole
Vice President, Business Operations and Controller

The diverse backgrounds and experiences of our team fuel the ever-present dedication and passion about what we do. We credit our achievements and the meaningful work we do to the fact that we are aligned, clear, and accountable with one another.

We work hard, but we also play hard. Whether celebrating restaurant week with a team lunch, recognizing birthdays, service anniversaries, certification accomplishments, team BBQs in summer, supporting teammates’ community fundraising endeavors, or taking a well-deserved pizza break during our DC office relocation or Baltimore office renovation, there is never a shortage of support, smiles, and FOOD!

I truly believe joining COMPASS was one of the best choices I have ever made. The opportunities are endless and the environment is one of respect, honesty, enthusiasm, and energy! I can’t imagine being anywhere else!

Ron Nemes
Chief Information Security Officer, Cyber Security Practice Leader

I truly love working for COMPASS; every day brings a new challenge that the entire team is ready to roll up their sleeves and tackle. The value that we bring to every customer can be seen in a very short period of time. It’s reflected in the feedback they provide and their own enthusiasm to shift to a more safe and secure environment.

Our team is constantly striving to become the best at its craft; with half of the team members achieving new, industry-recognized security certifications and the remaining team members aiming to achieve theirs by year’s end. The company also fosters a family atmosphere, eating lunch together on a daily basis and assisting one another even outside of the office.

Karen Wade
Financial Analyst

I love my team. I love the flexibility I have to balance my work and home lives. Bob and the managers care about us and help us grow and strive to learn new skillsets; they appreciate us, and we can see that every day.

Business plans are shared openly making us feel that this company is as much ours as it is the owners. I feel trusted and encouraged to provide ideas. I also love my job because no one day is ever the same. New challenges and situations are presented each day, which helps me stay focused, interested, and continually growing. I love the people I work with and the way we get the work done!

Chris Yates
Lead Technician, Critical Systems Monitoring

There’s a certain point on Monday mornings when you can’t believe you are just starting another five-day workweek. I knew that feeling very well until I started working at COMPASS. This company has a different feeling, and it’s something you notice on the first day.

It could be the people who work here, who are all weirdly happy to see you in the morning (which is extremely contagious). Or it could be because we like to celebrate all events with food — from work anniversaries to ‘it’s a nice day’ Thursdays, there’s always food to be shared. Maybe it’s the feeling you get when you walk out of a COMPASS meeting knowing you and the team completed quality work, and you’re proud of it. It’s definitely all of those things and much more. I’m thrilled to be working at a place that celebrates your accomplishments and encourages your growth, all while offering a discounted gym membership because, as I said, we like to eat.

We are honored to receive recognition as one of the best places to work in Baltimore. Even more exciting is hearing all of the reasons our team members love to work at COMPASS. I am proud of our team and cannot think of a better group of professionals who can lead us in fulfilling our vision to shift the world’s data to be safe and secure.
